About NANA

The Native American Nurses Association (NANA) is a professional organization that brings together Native American nurses, nursing students, healthcare professionals, and others who serve Native people and communities.

NANA provides opportunities for members to connect, share knowledge and experiences, develop professional relationships, and support the growth of Native nurses and future generations of healthcare professionals.

Through education, professional development, community involvement, scholarships, and fellowship, NANA continues a proud tradition of Native nursing leadership while honoring the cultures, values, and communities we serve.

Together, we celebrate Native nurses, strengthen connections, and support the future of Native healthcare.

Our History

The roots of the Native American Nurses Association (NANA) extend back many decades through the efforts of Native nurses committed to supporting one another and improving healthcare for Native communities.

Prior to 1976, the professional organization was known as the Native American Nurses Association. In 1976, the organization changed its name to the American Indian/Alaska Native Nurses Association. Ten years later, the organization disbanded.

The Sun Valley Chapter of the American Indian Nurses Association later reorganized and established itself as an independent association. Today, the organization continues its work as the Native American Nurses Association (NANA).

Honoring our history. Supporting today’s nurses. Inspiring future generations.

Our Mission

To promote, mentor, and support Native American nurses and those serving Native people by enhancing cultural professional nursing practice thereby improving the well-being of our communities.

Philosophy

Recognizing disparities in health status and healthcare delivery for Native Americans, the Native American Nurses Association (NANA) is committed to promoting an optimal level of health and well-being for Native American people and communities.

In striving toward this goal, NANA embraces a holistic understanding of health that encompasses physical, mental, and social well-being, recognizing that health is more than simply the absence of disease or illness.
